Onward

Friday: Zagreb - Rijeka- Rovinj

The sun starts to rise here at 4:30am. 🤨  That seems excessive.  Also, can confirm that Europe is experiencing a heat wave. 🥵. Thankfully our hotel has air conditioning.

Everyone loves to talk about the World Cup once they find out we are Americans.  It’s rare to find a Croatian who isn’t also fluent in English. And they are nice about it when they switch languages, which hasn’t always been our traveling experience.

We talked a long time with two quirky teenage boys last night in the square.  They crossed between English and Croatian thru the entire conversation, and I’m jealous of their brains.  And wished for some subtitles. (Not enough to pull out my google audio translate tho…)  The number of times I’ve had a conversation with two teenagers that switched between Spanish and English is too many to count. It all felt very familiar.

So on Friday, we left Zagreb and headed Rovinj, our next hotel stay.  With plans to stop for lunch in Rijeka.  We were annoyed to discover that the google maps took us on a route that avoids tolls, which was not our intended travel setting.  So we drove a bunch of mountain roads (time for Dramamine!) and went an hour extra than needed.  It’s ok.  Live and learn. We ate at a nice family-owned seafood konobo (tavern) next to the water.  Chris ate fishies.  I ate plain spaghetti with tomato sauce.  Eating simple in hopes that my butthole will cooperate.  (So far today it has been. Still, praise be everyday to Dude Wipes). After lunch, a short drive to Rovinj, which is straight out of a fairy tale.  Pictures below.

We walked around a bit. Sat and listened to some live music and had water and some ice cream.  Walked around some more. Had pizza for dinner.  Ran to our room to get our swimsuits and swam in the ocean with the sunset.  It was an iconic summer evening. Note: cicadas sound different here than in Kansas.  Less weeeewooooooweeeeee and more rhythmic high bursts. Haha.
