Queen of the Seven Kingdoms

 Sunday - Dubrovnik, day 2



The hubs treated me like a Queen today, for today is my birthday.  We started the day off with a quick pastry and headed to the Maritime Museum. Lots of neat stuff, like model ships, maps, compasses, barometers, etc. This is something I want to go back and relook at things online to absorb more of the information.  We were on a little bit of a time crunch due to the hubby’s secret plans for my birthday brunch. 


Off he whisked me away outside of the city walls and we rode a dragon, I mean cable car, up Mount Srd and dined at the restaurant on the top overlooking the old town. Hubby reserved one of the front row 360 view tables and it was spectacular. You can’t find a better view.  Perhaps anywhere in the world…maybe.  It was ridiculously cool.  We sat there for as long as our reservation allowed.  I was enjoying myself so much with the perfect view, weather, and company that I didn’t realize the sun was cooking me pink on my left side.  Haha, here I just said we were doing a good job with sun protection.  Just a bit pink and definitely way different than the other side.  Hopefully I don’t wake up looking like a lobster tomorrow.  It seems the sun was too enthusiastic in welcoming me to my 44th revolution. 


We headed back to our room to change into swimsuits for our journey to Lokrum island. It’s just right beside old town and the boat leaves every 15 minutes.  It has a monastery, tons of walking trails, and places to swim.  As well as a Game of Thrones exhibit (the island was a filming spot), and awesome peacocks running around like they own the place.  Which they do. 


I sat upon the Iron Throne and hubby was a good hubby and captured a picture.  Yes, I am Queen.  Then we wandered around and finally found a good choice to swim back next to the original dock. The water was cold here!  I bobbed in the water on my airplane pillow floatie, while hubby explored around with his snorkel. I eventually emerged and laid on some rocks with my book, alongside the wandering peacocks.  Then we headed back to the boat and across the water to our room to clean up. 


Only a few moments of rest allowed in our schedule today, because we wanted to walk the city walls before they closed for the evening. Glorious views. A very rigorous walk however. We worked for our supper. 


We picked out a place to eat, and it, alas, was the only meal we’ve been disappointed in here in Croatia. It’s ok.  We had to balance out the spectacular brunch we had today I guess. Then we had a gelato and headed back to the room early. I will sleep well tonight. 


Hoping that this Queen will wake up to a golden tan and healed skin.  























Where are my dragons?!?!

Wednesday: Zagreb, Day 1  That’s how you say good day or good afternoon in Croatian.  That’s the first phrase hubby asked a server to teach us how to say over a delicious sausage and bread wrap thingy called a crottotinnaliniii….? I’ll come back with the correct word on that later.  Also, it turns out, fried potatoes are yet again universal to every culture I have experienced.  We had some yummy fried potato wedges seasoned with yummy stuff and a sauce that reminded me of Freddy’s fry sauce, but homemade for sure   So, I’m up at 4:07am on the day after our flight in.  Jetlag is a killer every time.  Not unexpected.   We tried really hard to stay up with the sun, but as I could barely form words at 4:30pm after a 24 hr travel day, this was not going to happen. Big Booms

Thursday: Zagreb, Day 2 I never did go back to sleep. 🤣 After a lovely breakfast provided by our hotel, off we went to find adventures.  1st stop: the Cathedral of Zagreb 900 hundred years old and under construction. Old churches is one of our things.  I love to see the ceilings. This ceiling: 4/10.   Next stop: Heather has Zagreb coffee.  This city is reportedly iconic for coffee culture.  I skipped coffee at breakfast to save myself for my one coffee for the day.  I ordered a White Coffee (bijela kava), which is basically a latte.  Can confirm: it’s delicious.  Then we headed to St. Marks, another old church.  But it was not open to visitors today!  Today is a Croatia holiday, their Independence Day, from 1991 when they cut ties with Yugoslavia.   (and earlier this week was their anti-fascist celebration.  Anti-fascist Struggle Day, originating from WWII events.)  We think it was closed for Independence Day events....

Sunday Scaries

Sunday: Rovinj-Pula-Plitvice Croatia wins! Not that I know anything about the World Cup “bracket”, but I’m glad to know that USA, Algeria, and Croatia have made it to the next round.  We said our final goodbyes to Rovinj, getting lost one more time.    I think the stairway to our room/apartment was like the Room of Requirement in Harry Potter.    If you think about it real hard, it appears, in a different location each time.  So in Rovinj, we had to park our car outside the city and then a hotel colleague came to pick us up.    Two nights ago, it was Maria.    This time to go back to the car, it was Maria’s son.    We didn’t catch his name exactly - something delightfully Croatian.    We stood and talked to him another 45 minutes after we reached our car.    He was lovely and we offered him our guest room if he ever decides to visit Kansas.    It’s on his bucket list to visit the cowboys in the USA...
